Bulldog Wrestlers Compete in 6 Duals to Finish Adverse Week

In what was scheduled to be the busiest week of the wrestling season, adverse weather and school cancellations forced practice to be cancelled on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs hit the road on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, to take on 6 different opponents to finish the week.

Kasson Mantorville Dual

First up for the Bulldogs was a Thursday night trip to Kasson Mantorville, to take on the top ranked 3x defending state champion Komets. The Bulldogs competed well, but in the end K-M’s strength and team balance was more than the Bulldogs could deal with. Highlight for PEM included decision victories for both Joe Stucky and Carter Marx. In addition, the Bulldogs had many other competitive matches including two 1 point losses, and 1 point loss.

LARP/GMLOS Tri

The Bulldogs only had about 18 hours to regroup before they were back on the road to Grand Meadow to take on conference rivals Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson (LARP) and Grand Meadow/Leroy-Ostrander/Southland (GMLOS). First up on the evening was LARP. Garrett Olson (120) was the Bulldogs lone victory in the first 4 weights, using only :53 to pick up a pin. But going into 132, the Bulldogs were trailing 13-6. Cael Marx (132) scored a major decision to bring the team score to 13-10, and Cooper Hofschulte picked up a pin only 22 seconds into the 2nd period to give the Bulldogs their first lead at 16-13. This set up the match of the evening pitting PEM’s 2018 State Entrant Joe Stucky against LARP’s currently #7 ranked Dominic Jenkins. In what turned out to be a tremendously exciting match full of scoring and scrambles, Stucky got the last takedown to take an 8-6 lead and hold on for the victory.

After Carter Marx added a pin at 152, the Bulldogs held a stronger lead at 25-13. But LARP rallied with 3 pins at 160, 170, and 182 to take the lead back once again at 31-25. The LARP lead was fleeting though, as they were forced to forfeit at 195 and 220 to Dustin Dittrich and Riley Wingert. Going into 285, LARP was still within striking distance, down by only 6, but junior Logan Wingert needed only :35 seconds to get a pin and put the finishing touches on the meet by a score of PEM 43 LARP 31.

Next on the docket for the PEM Bulldogs were the Bulldogs of GMLOS. GMLOS got off to a quick start with pins in the first two weight classes to take a 12-0 lead. But PEM rallied in the next 3 weight classes with a Garrett Olson pin at 120, a Kael Lamb come-from-behind 5-4 victory at 126, and a Cael Marx pin at 132 put PEM out in front 15-12. GMLOS won by decision at 138 to tie the score again at 15-15. In another well-fought battle, Joe Stucky gave PEM the lead again with a 4-1 decision victory, followed by Carter Marx accepting a forfeit at 152 making the team score PEM 24 GMLOS 15.

GMLOS would rally yet again with pins at 160 & 170, but freshman Martin Prieto would put a halt to the rally at 182. After giving up the first takedown of the match, Prieto rallied with 13 consecutive points before ultimately getting the pin and sealing the fate of the dual. GMLOS was forced to forfeit to Dustin Dittrich and Riley Wingert at 195 and 220 giving PEM an insurmountable 42-27 lead. The match at 285 promised to be a barn-burner with two state ranked heavyweights, PEM’s Logan Wingert and GMLOS’ Clayton Luthe. Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Wingert hooked up a pinning combination to secure the pin and the 48-27 conference win for PEM.

Cannon Falls Duals

Twelve hours later, the Bulldogs were yet again on the road, this time headed north to the Cannon Falls Duals. First up for the Bulldogs was the tournament’s eventual champion Northfield Raiders. The 11th ranked Raiders flexed their muscle down low winning the first 7 matches of the dual with 4 state ranked individuals, including two top ranked wrestlers at 132 and 138. The only wins the Bulldogs manufactured in the dual was a 3-2 win by Carter Marx over state ranked Ethan Johnson at 152, a 28-11 technical fall victory by Dustin Dittrich at 195, and a first period fall by Logan Wingert at 285.

The 2nd round pitted the Bulldogs against the Section 1 AA rival Cannon Falls Bombers. The Bombers got the ball rolling winning the first 3 weight classes to take an early 13-0 lead, but starting at 126, it would be all Bulldogs the rest of the way. Kael Lamb would get things rolling with another come-from-behind victory at 126. Cael Marx (132) followed with a pin late in the first period. Cooper Hofschulte (138) required only 4:00 to put up 17 points and earn a technical fall, giving the Bulldogs their first lead (14-13), which they would not relinquish. At 145, in a Section Tournament rematch, Joe Stucky used a takedown and an escape to win by a 3-0 score, in what would be the last close match of the dual meet. Starting at 152, the Bulldogs collected 7 straight pins by Carter Marx (152), Connor Jones (160), Alex Rahman (170), Martin Prieto (182), Dustin Dittrich (195), Riley Wingert (220), and Logan Wingert (285) to finish the dual by a final score of PEM 59 Cannon Falls 13.

In the final dual of the long weekend, PEM squared off against Rochester John Marshall. Freshman Isaac Walch got the Bulldogs started with a 6-2 come from behind victory at 106. JM got a pin at 113 to take a 6-3 team lead. But it was to be short-lived as the Bulldogs would storm back with 12 straight victories by Garrett Olson, Kael Lamb, Cael Marx, Cooper Hofschulte, Lafe Aarsvold, Joe Stucky, Carter Marx, Connor Jones, Alex Rahman, Dustin Dittrich, Riley Wingert, and Logan Wingert to close out the meet,
