On Jan. 24, the PEM wrestlers honored their parents with a Parent’s Night celebration and hosted 3 top SE MN wrestling programs in a home quadrangular. The Bulldogs started out the evening with the Goodhue Wildcats, currently ranked #8 in MN in Class A. The Bulldogs were overmatched in the first two weight classes, but freshmen Isaac Walch (106) and Jason Feils (113) did a great job limiting the damage to two minor decisions as Goodhue took a 6-0 lead into 120.

Sophomores Garrett Olson and Kael Lamb got the Bulldogs on the board at 120 and 126 with 2 decisions of their own to tie the team score back up at 6-6. At 132, Goodhue notched a pin to retake the team lead this time at 12-6. Sophomore Cael Marx got 3 points back for the Bulldogs at 138, but the Wildcats scored a decision and a major decision at 145 and 152 stretching their lead to 10 points (19-9). A forfeit victory for Carter Marx at 160 brought the Bulldogs back within 4 points (19-15). But at 170 and 182, Goodhue’s twin punch of Kelby and Kaleb O’Reilly scored 12 more points for the Wildcats stretching their lead to 16 (31-15) going into the final 3 weight classes.

At 195, PEM freshman Martin Prieto put on a takedown clinic and earned a 26-10 technical fall victory keeping the Bulldogs within 11 points heading into the final 2 weight classes. The premier match of the evening happened next at 220 where PEM senior Dustin Dittrich bested Goodhue senior Kodee O’Reilly by a score of 4-1. The 3 additional team points pulled the Bulldogs within 8 points but with only one weight class remaining, there wasn’t enough weight classes left for the Bulldogs to complete the comeback. Junior Riley Wingert earned a quick 1st period pin at 285 for 6 more points, but it was too little too late as the Wildcats would hang on for the 2 point win.

Bulldogs Topple Dover-Eyota Eagles

Next up for the Bulldogs was conference rival Dover-Eyota. The Eagles got on the board first with a pin at 106, but PEM freshman Jason Feils answered back with a pin of his own at 113 to tie the team score at 6-6. Garrett Olson gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the night with a 1st period pin at 120. But the Eagles retaliated with a major decision and a technical fall at 126 and 132 to take back the lead 15-12.

Cael Marx earned a pin at 138 for the Bulldogs giving PEM the lead back at 18-15, but a Dover-Eyota victory at 145 tied the meet back up at 18-18. Carter Marx used less than a minute to get the Bulldogs back out in front by 6 with a pin at 152, but the Bulldogs had to forfeit 160 due to injury at the meet was once again tied at 24-24. Sophomore Alex Rahman gained a major decision victory to put the Bulldogs ahead once again, this time 28-24. Martin Prieto earned a forfeit victory at 182 to stretch the Bulldog lead to 10.

The Eagles closed the gap one more time with a pin at 195, but cousins Riley and Logan Wingert finished the dual with 12 more points for the Bulldogs with a 2nd period pin and forfeit victory giving the Bulldogs a 16 point conference win.

Bulldogs take down Chatfield Gophers

In the final dual of the evening, the Bulldogs faced off against the Chatfield Gophers. The strength of the Chatfield lower weights was on display to start of the dual as the Gophers used a decision and a pin to take an early 9-0 lead. Garrett Olson once again jump-started the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 1st period pin in only :22 seconds. But the Gophers answered back with two pins and 126 and 132 to take a 21-6 lead into 138. The Bulldog comeback began with a 2nd period pin by Cael Marx at 138 to close the 15 point lead down to 9 (21-12).

Then at 145, sophomore Cooper Hofschulte earned a hard-fought decision victory to narrow the score to 21-15. At 152, senior Carter Marx squared off with Chatfield senior Nathan Goldsmith and earned a very close 2-1 victory to get the Bulldogs within 3 (21-18). But the Gophers battled back with a forfeit victory at 160 and a decision at 170 to once again extend their lead to 12 (30-18). Yet again, the Bulldogs would answer back starting with Martin Prieto at 182, who would use a blast double leg to put his Chatfield opponent on his back for the 2nd period pin closing the gap to 30-24.

At 195, senior Dustin Dittrich would require only :36 seconds to notch a pin and tie the dual meet at 30-30. Junior Riley Wingert would give the Bulldogs their first lead of the meet at 220 with another 1st period pin to make the score 36-30. To finish the night, junior Logan Wingert would accept a forfeit, making the final score PEM 42 Chatfield 30.
