On last Thursday evening the PEM wrestlers traveled to Goodhue to take on two HVL schools in Goodhue and Byron.

First up for the Bulldogs were the Section 1AA rival Byron Bears. Issac Walch got the Bulldogs off to a fast start with a :55 second pin at 106, giving the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead in the dual. The next 5 weight classes were all Byron as the Bears used 2 pins, 1 tech fall, and 2 major decisions to open up a commanding 25-6 lead. Of note, during this stretch, 3 Bulldogs shaved team points that would prove critical down the stretch. Seventh grader Alex Hinrichs held his senior opponent to a major decision. Likewise, Garrett Olson and Austen Michel were both able to avoid getting pinned while wrestling 2018 State Champions Maxwell and Mitchell Peterson. At 145, the Bulldogs began the long ascent back into the meet with a 1st period pin by Cael Marx, cutting the Byron lead down to 25-12.

Dereck Boyum followed suit with another 1st period pin at 152, trimming the once 19 point lead down to 7. At 160, the Bears elected to forfeit to PEM senior Joe Stucky and bump their 160 (Will Wharton) up to 170. The forfeit closed the team score gap to 25-24. Then the Bulldogs countered with a forfeit to Wharton which gave the Bears another 7 point lead with 4 matches remaining. Alex Rahman was moved up to 182 and came up big for the Bulldogs with a pin in the 2nd period, which again brought the Bulldogs within a point on the scoreboard at 31-30.

Martin Prieto gave the Bulldogs another boost at 195 with a 19-8 major decision, giving the Bulldogs the lead back for the first time since 106 at 34-31 with 2 weight classes remaining. Byron once again took the lead back at 220 with a pin and 6 more points to lead 37-34 heading into the heavyweight match. But the Bulldogs have one of the best closers in the business in senior heavyweight Logan Wingert. Wingert came through yet again, needing only :47 seconds to get a takedown and a pin, giving the Bulldogs a 40-37 victory over Byron.

Then at 126, Garrett Olson got the Bulldogs on the board with a 1st period pin. Austen Michel followed suit at 132 with another 1st period pin, and the Bulldogs were back in the meet down only 14-12. Goodhue got a pin at 138 to go up 20-12 and Cael Marx countered at 145 with a pin for the Bulldogs, bringing the score back to 20-18. Goodhue won by major decision at 152 making the score 24-18, but Joe Stucky won by fall at 160 to tie the meet up at 24-24.

The following evening, the Bulldogs were on the road again, this time to Wabasha for conference meets with the Caledonia-Houston Warriors and the Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons.

In the first meet of the night vs. Caledonia Houston, the Bulldogs again found themselves down early 19-0 after dropping the first 4 matches. At 132, Austen Michael got the ball rolling for PEM with a 1st period cradle, getting the pin with only :02 seconds remaining in the first period. Kael Lamb kept the momentum rolling at 138 with a hard fought 8-4 win. Cael Marx continued with another pin at 145, and suddenly the Bulldogs trailed by only 4 points at 19-15.

At 152 Dereck Boyum wrestled very well in a 11-6 loss to #6 ranked Isaac Densted. Then at 160, senior Joe Stucky tacked on 6 more points with a 2nd period pin, closing the Caledonia-Houston lead to 22-21. The Warriors got a win at 170 to extend their lead to 4 points but then surrendered a 6 point forfeit to Martin Prieto at 182 giving the Bulldogs their first lead of the meet at 27-26. But it was to be short-lived as Caledonia-Houston would get a decision and a pin at 195 and 220 giving them an insurmountable 7 point lead going into the final match at heavyweight. In a rematch of state-ranked opponents at 285, once again PEM’s Logan Wingert needed just less than a period to pin #8 ranked Alec Francis of Caledonia-Houston.
