Bulldogs Outlast Caledonia-Houston to Win 15 Team PEM Invitational-Joe Stucky Joins 100 WIN Club!

On Saturday Jan. 12, the PEM wrestlers got to compete at home for just the second time this season, this time hosting the 34th annual PEM Invitational. This year’s field featured 15 teams from MN and WI, including Section rivals, Lake City, Byron, St. Thomas Academy, and LaCrescent. It was a day filled with ups and downs, but when the dust had settled, the Bulldogs clung to the tournament championship my a mere 11 points over the always tough Caledonia-Houston Warriors.

The highlight of the day for the Bulldogs came in the first round when junior Joe Stucky notched his 100th career win with a pin over Tanner Sanderson of Wabasha Kellogg late in the 2nd period. In the previous 57 year history of Plainview and PEM wrestling, only 27 other Gophers and Bulldogs have accomplished the feat, with Joe becoming the 28th member of the 100 WIN club. Even more impressive was that Joe is just the 12th wrestler in program history to achieve the milestone as underclassmen.

Individual highlights for the Bulldogs on the day included two champions: senior Dustin Dittrich (182) and junior Logan Wingert (285). Dittrich defeated his St. Thomas Academy opponent by a major decision score of 12-3 in the finals, extended his season record to a perfect 17-0. While Wingert pinned all 3 of his opponents, including last year’s tournament champion Elijah Marks of Austin. Wingert currently has a 29-2 record on the season with a team leading 25 pins!

Other finalists included sophomore teammates Cooper Hofschulte (132) and Cael Marx (138). Both were narrowly defeated in the finals, but had big semi-final victories. Marx tech falled the #3 seeded Ethan Johnson of Eau Claire North, while Hofschulte avenged a 3-2 loss from earlier in the week over FCLMCC’s 2018 state entrant Caden Anderson with a 6-5 victory.

Garrett Olson (120), Joe Stucky (152), and Riley Wingert (220) all placed 3rd for the Bulldogs. Olson and Wingert both picked up falls for the Bulldogs in the final round with Olson’s being a come-from behind pin over 2018 state entrant Trevor Pearson of Maple River.

Four other Bulldogs, Jason Feils (106), Lafe Aarsvold (145), Carter Marx (182), and Martin Prieto (182), all had quarter-final losses, but battled all the way back through the consolation bracket to 5th place, earning the Bulldogs a combined 48 team points. Of special note was freshman Jason Feils, weighing in at 106 for the first time all season, posting a 4-1 record on the day.

Coach’s Comments: “It was another very competitive day of wrestling with many outstanding individuals competing in the brackets including multiple state placewinners and 3 previous state champions. I was very happy for Joe and his very special career accomplishment, proud of all our athletes’ effort and perseverance throughout the day, and extremely appreciative of all the workers and volunteers who made this another outstanding event for all of the teams involved.”
